Sattler's Stained Glass Studio Ltd. and the START program. In the heart of Pleasantville, Nova Scotia, Sattler’s Stained Glass Studio is preserving a centuries-old craft—while creating meaningful opportunities for the next generation. Kunstglaser Norbert Sattler, who has worked in the trade for over 50 years, was trained in Germany and Switzerland before founding his studio in Nova Scotia in 1980. Today, the studio is known for its expertise in stained glass restoration, serving historic churches, commercial buildings and private homes. Last year, with support from Nova Scotia’s START program, Norbert welcomed Apprentice Xue Yang, an emerging artist to the studio. Although this is not a recognized apprenticeship trade in Nova Scotia, Norbert saw the value in mentoring someone with a passion for the art form and the potential to carry the trade and traditions forward. The START program helped offset the initial cost of hiring and training, enabling Sattler’s Stained Glass Studio to invest in Yang’s learning and growth. Under the guidance of Norbert and artist and glass painter Sue Obata, she is gaining hands-on experience in this intricate and time-honoured craft—working with delicate glass, lead, and traditional techniques that few still practice. One year into her role, Yang has made impressive progress—building her skills, confidence, and understanding of the meticulous techniques required in stained glass restoration. While she is doing well, she knows there is still much to learn before mastering the trade. The complexity of the work means she will continue to train closely with Norbert, benefiting from his decades of expertise and dedication to passing on his craft. Their ongoing collaboration not only strengthens Yang’s abilities but also ensures that this rare art form and trade will have a future in Nova Scotia. This partnership is a strong example of how the START program can support small businesses in creating employment opportunities while helping to preserve valuable heritage skills in Nova Scotia.
